Metro PhilippinesIn 2001, Metro Ministries began offering its programs for children in Manila, the capital city of the Philippine Isles where 40 percent of the population lives beneath the poverty line. Many children and their families actually live in and around the vast city dumps or in an old cemetery called the City of the Skull. Here, children live among not just the thousands of tombs, but among the uncovered remains of those who have died.
Today, Metro's Sunday School programs reaches 17,500 children per week. We operate our Back to School project, Bags of Love Food Drive and Operation Holiday Hope which seeks to provide every child with a gift for Christmas. Every child receives a visit in his or her home once a week.
Metro Philippines is making an enormous impact on the lives of Filipino children and families. In 2001, Pastor Bill Wilson, founder and Senior Pastor of Metro Ministries, took steps to expand the ministry to Manila.
With God working through committed people, Sunday School was brought to children who live in some of the most poverty stricken areas of the Philippines.
The city of Manila, from where our Head office staff operates, is a sprawling metropolis populated with over 12 million people, of which 50% are children. Networking with the local churches, we conduct weekly training sessions in different parts of the city to equip the local church teams to conduct Sidewalk Sunday School in the slums and squatter areas of Manila. Metro Ministries staff also operates 3 Sunday School sites in Tondo every week, and minister to the children in the rehabilitation center of Bicutan.
In 2006, with the dedication of our 12 staff personnel and diligent effort from national local church teams, Metro Philippines expanded into ten additional areas across the nation. The city and island expansion areas are Davao, Digos, Cagayan D’Oro, Cotabato, Iligan, Leyte, Samar, Palawan, Bulacan, and Pangasinan. As of January 2009 Metro has 89 partner churches, 102 Sunday School sites and over 1500 volunteers.
Won-By-One: Child Sponsorship
Metro has extended its child sponsorship program to the Philippines connecting sponsors from all over the world with needy children in Manila. For $23 per month sponsors are able to support our programs for these children. Donations are invested in three major ways. 1. Home Visits 2.Sunday School 3.Yearly School Tuition Additional monetary gifts can help to provide food, clothing, household needs, school supplies, and medicine to their sponsored child and his or her family. Sponsors receive a photo and information about their sponsored child along with annual updates on his/her progress.
Adopt a SiteYou may also sponsor an entire Sunday School site for a month for $130. Approximately 250 children will benefit from your involvement in the adopt a Site program. Each week the children will attend the Sunday School held in their neighborhood. Metro Philippines works with churches who handle over 100 sites throughout the Philippines. These churches designate young workers and adults who are trained weekly by Metro Trainers to accurately minister to the children with the fast-paced, vibrant Sunday School lessons, and home visits. Your financial help will go toward training, curriculm, flyers, toys and treats for the children.
Operation Compound
Metro Philippines is in need of donations for our head office compound in Manila. In 2005 we moved into this large facility, which houses our office, staff family housing, meeting rooms, visitor accomodation, Sunday School truck parking, and our warehouse. The Panter's Bank got on board with us by allowing us a very low mortgage rate for 5 years, and no interest to be paid if we pay off the entire mortgage by September of 2010. We have been saving consistently, but there is a long way to go. This building, centrally loacated by the airport is crucial for our ministry to the Philippines, and for the 9 families who live there. We need some help with this. The final figure will be approximately $350,000 US.
