Metro’s programs for children in Romania began about 4 years ago with our Mobile Bakery Outreach. The Mobile Bakery is a vehicle that makes 200 loaves of bread per hour. We traveled to 36 villages across Romania providing bread to the children and villagers there, most of whom have too little to eat. It was during these outreaches that we encountered the plight of the Romas or the “gypsies.” The Roma are on the bottom of the economic ladder and they’re considered to be “the outcasts,” within the land.
They live together in villages in small huts that have no electricity or running water and that provide inadequate defense against the cold winters. Many children spend their days forreging for berries in the forest or begging in the streets to help provide for their familes.
Metro RomaniaAbout 2 years ago, we began our Sunday School and other outreach programs for Romanian children in 8 different villages. We are able to provide some limited financial assistance to families who lack money for medicine, food and clothing. We are currently partnering
with others to reach out to children in other villages.

“Warm Feet Project”One of the most pressing needs for the children is for proper shoes. When children outgrow their shoes, they have to cut the ends off of the shoes so that they can continue to wear them. This provides little protection for their feet against the harsh winters. Metro Romania is sponsoring a program called Warm Feet to provide thousands of children with shoes and socks.
