'Meet a Family Struggling to Survive After the Death of a Father'

Boxes of Love: Our Annual Food Drive

Each year, we seek to provide hope and support to inner city families during the holidays. Each Thanksgiving, we operate a program called Boxes of Love which provides a 25lb box of food and a turkey to the needy in the community. In 2008, Metro Ministries supplied over 1,500 families with food during this outreach.

How important can a turkey really be?

I want to share a wonderful story with you that illustrates the true importance of a thanksgiving dinner to a really hurting family.  A young lady on staff, Bronwyn, was pleased that one of her sponsored children Ashley was to receive a box of love.  She told Ashley to make sure she was at Sidewalk Sunday School that week.  Ashley didn’t show up, which was very unusual.  After Sunday School was over, Bronwyn went to hand deliver the dinner, because she knew how much it meant to Ashley and her family. When she got to the apartment, at first there was no answer, but when she identified herself, the door opened.  A frightened Ashley ran into Bronwyn arms, very happy to see her.  Her face was streaked with tears and she said that she was alone, her mom was in the hospital, and she was scared!  Bronwyn was able to calm Ashley down and stayed with her until her mom called from the hospital.  Arrangements were made for a neighbor to take care of Ashley and then they had the fun of opening the box and going through all the food.  Bronwyn said “I can’t help but think, if it hadn’t been for that turkey, I may never have been there for Ashley when she was so afraid. I had no reason to go see her that day, but God used some food in a box to put me in the right place at the right time.”

How You Can Help

You can donate to this project all year around. For every gift of $25 we can provide a turkey, plus a box full of groceries to a family.
